Summer Reading…

Sorry for the lack of updates…would you believe it’s because I’ve been so busy working? I figure since we’re in the dog days I’ve summer, now is the perfect time to share some of the books I’ve been reading. Some of these came out within the last couple of months, others have been out for awhile–either way, they are all worth reading!

HERA is the third book from George O’Connor’s ongoing Greek God series from First Second Books, and you guessed it, it’s about the queen of the mighty gods herself, Hera. Not content to be another one of Zeus’ conquests, Hera makes Zeus marry her, showing she is just as powerful as he is. The book doesn’t claim to tell all of Hera’s stories, but instead picks and chooses the tales that best reflect her personality, including her long-standing discord with her namesake, Heracles. O’Conner does a great job staying true to the classical sources but delivering them in comic-book fashion reminiscent of Ditko and Kirby (his cyclops especially!).

Murder By High Tide is by a the terrific French cartoonist Maurice Tilleux (a new discovery for me). Republished by Fantagraphics, this edition features two Gil Jordan detective stories. The artwork is amazing and Tilleux is clearly a master of the “comic-dynamic” style (check out this great preview). I really hope Fantagraphics makes a habit of reproducing these types of stories for an English-speaking market!

I Thought You Would Be Funnier by Shannon Wheeler (the crazed mind behind Too Much Coffee Man) is a collection of single-panel gag cartoons seen in the New Yorker. Divided into chapters like “Art & Medicine,” “Love & Relationships,” and “Coffee & Booze” it’s a hilarious collection of comedy published by BOOM Town.

And those are just a few of the good books lining my office shelf–I’m gonna go read some more!
