EL CID: Prologue
March 28, 2011, filed under: El Cid, by Lex
I’ve been hammering away at the Prologue for Kid Beowulf vs. El Cid these past few weeks and have just three more pages to ink! The prologue is the part of the story where I retell the original epic and get to dabble in my own “epic poetry.” It takes some doing condensing these thousand line poems into bite sized chunks and I never feel like I do them justice, but the prologue is helpful for the reader who may not be familiar with the original epics and it’s also fun to do. Looking back at the prologue for book 1 and then for book 2, I remember how difficult it was for me to draw in this more realistic style and how I dreaded doing the prologue for CID. Once I started drawing though, the layouts and pages came much easier and it’s been a lot of fun to dabble in this style. I think it just shows I’ve gotten better as an artist now that this sort of drawing is as intimidating as it used to be for me. Here are some pages in process from the prologue of Kid Beowulf vs. El Cid, once the inks are done they’ll be sent to my colorist for some dramatic watercolors! (click to enlarge)
