The Morgue

This week my morgue reached maximum capacity and in honor of the occasion, I thought I’d post a tribute to it! For those of you who are curious, a morgue file is basically a big binder full of reference material that illustrator’s use. The term originally comes from files of clippings and articles that criminal investigators or reporters kept as reference; over time the phrase morphed into reference material used by illustrators and graphic designers (and now cartoonists). In this day and age of Google Images I don’t know if morgues are still as common as they used to be, but it’s an invaluable resource and is a huge help when world building. For my own morgue I trolled through magazines and the internet searching for very specific images that over the years has helped define the world of Kid Beowulf and with each new book I do, the morgue just keeps expanding.
