Post Comicon ‘07 Report — Part I
July 31, 2007, filed under: Studio, by Lex
Another Comicon has come and gone and I’m reminded that there really is Christmas in July. The show was exhausting but a lot of fun–my thanks to everyone who stopped by my table and gobbled up Kid Beowulf, I was happy to unload another box of books and lighten the load for the trip back and in my closet. I did add a few more books to my collection..it’s tough not too when there’s so much good stuff. To the left is Darth Miranda–Darth Vader’s Brazilian twin sister. Here are few more photos from the floor…
This is my table in Small Press…calm before the storm. Everyone got a kick out of the Hama sculpts – and I brought just enough books to cover me through Sunday…(whew!).
Jabba held court on the main floor. As always, Lucasfilm had a big presence and I was snapping photos like mad.
This Chewie is made entirely of legos!
The sexy statue of Leia is taken from a Bruce Timm character design (which is relevant only to Bruce Timm fanboys like me.). More photos coming soon.
Kid B. Shwag Bag
July 24, 2007, filed under: News, by LexI head down to Comicon tomorrow and can be found in the Small Press area at table P14. I’ll have a slew of new goodies to show off, but for those of you who aren’t going to San Diego, I’ll post a little preview here.
The big item (scaling in at approximately 4″ tall) is the Hama Sculpt. I have a limited number of these limited edition maquettes; sculpted to exacting precision, these are the first in a series of Kid B. sculptures. I’ll have them available in a variety of styles: White Resin, Marble Resin, Bronzed and fully painted versions are available (on a pre-order basis).
If you’re interested in purchasing one email me (lex@kidbeowulf.com) and I’ll give you the low-down on pricing (I ‘ll have some official pricing in the shop later on).
I’ve also cooked up a Teaser Trailer for A Bard’s Tale–many thanks to Brian Kolm for his AfterEffects wizardry. We did this in a couple of days and I’m really pleased with the results; we’ve worked together on several projects and have a good short-hand that makes coming up with promos fun and inventive. You can see the new trailer in the Multimedia section along with the other trailers we’ve done.
Finally, I’ll bring along the just completed first part of A Bard’s Tale. I finished up the final pages just in time and am very pleased with how they turned out. So come on by my table (Small Press P14) to check all this goodness out; I’ll be there all 5 days of the con. There’s an excitement in the air as San Diego approaches and I’m looking forward to reveling in the throes of ubernerdom!
In related BEOWULF news, Neil Gaiman will be bringing a preview of the motion-capture BEOWULF film he scripted (directed by Robert Zemeckis). Click Neil’s name for details.
Powering Through to San Diego
July 18, 2007, filed under: News, by LexAny of you who frequent comic blogs have probably heard of Comicon’s imminent approach (July 25th-30th). It always sneaks up on me and this year is no different. I’m actually looking forward to this years convention (last year was rough)–I’ll have some goodies on display and a few surprises up my sleeve, but before next week comes I’ve still got to power through on some pages.
I’ve got roughly five more pages to pencil and nine more pages to ink to complete the first part of A Bard’s Tale (which clocks in at about 56 pages). My self-imposed deadline is Comicon, so I’m taking it down to the wire but I think I can do it. The last few days have been rough though as I’ve come up against a creative wall. I feel like Lion-O struggling to grip the side of a mountain as he talks to himself…”must cling, fingers slipping–sword of omens!”
Okay, enough fanboy drivel…here’s a page about to be inked.
Bard’s Tale: Blood Oath
July 11, 2007, filed under: Sketchbook, by LexThis splash page comes from a sequence I just finished inking. This shows Hrothgar after he’s just taken a blood oath with The Dragon; when Hrothgar’s blood mixes with The Dragon’s the elemental power of the monster is too much for him to handle and he sees flashes of the past present and future!
Shild & Esher
July 6, 2007, filed under: Characters, by Lex
Shild is Hrothgar and Ogier’s father and the leader of the Danes. He’s been seen better days and now those days are growing short. He’s done his best to leave his sons a safe home, but Hrothgar’s xenophobia worries Shild, so he tries one final attempt to keep peace between the Danes and Heathobards.
Esher is Shild’s advisor and the number of days he’s seen is not entirely known, suffice to say Esher has an uncanny knowledge of the world around him (unfortunately, not enough people ask him for his advice).
I Want to Have Brad Bird’s Baby

Ratatouille. Go see this movie and revel in the genius that is Brad Bird. Cartoonists and animators have known of his brilliance since the days of Iron Giant (and even before that with shows like The Critic and The Simpsons). Everybody was dazzled by his turn with The Incredibles. And now, once again, people can see for themselves why the best movie of the summer was done by a cartoon-loving freak.
